The Impacts of COVID-19 on Changes to Gambling and Other Behaviors with Addiction Risk: Clinical and Ethical Considerations
The COVID-19 pandemic has significantly impacted our lives with many individuals turning to coping strategies that involve addictive substances or other addictive behaviors, such as gambling. To gain insight into how individuals responded to COVID-19 related stress by changing gambling, gaming, alcohol use, and cannabis use behaviors, a probability-based panel sampling approach was taken to survey individuals aged 18+ during April and May 2021.

Over 1000 participants were asked about behavior changes from the year prior to the COVID-19 pandemic to the year following the government declaring a public health emergency. Survey findings will be presented that provide valuable insights into how COVID-19 has impacted gambling, gaming, alcohol, and cannabis use behaviors, factors related to an increased risk of harmful usage, and indicators suggesting increased rates of addictions may persist into the post-pandemic period. We will discuss how findings from the study will help inform clinical practices and raise ethical considerations.

Daniel K Blackwood | Moderator
LPCC, CCGC, CSAT @The Evolution Group
New Mexico is his home and New York is fun to visit. He began working in the field in 1984 and was part of a counseling firm, as a partner, with many wonderful clinicians, mentors, and colleagues. His practice focus included teens of divorce, anger, domestic violence, couples therapy, wilderness therapy, group therapy, CBT, Gestalt, Experiential, and humanistic theory and approaches. After many years of work together, we partners went our separate ways and in 1998 he opened up the Evolution Group, Inc. with one Administrative Assistant and one part time therapist working with him. The rest of the story is long and fun to tell but the short version is that we have grown into an amazing organization that is a joy to come to work for each day.
