The Impacts of COVID-19 on Changes to Gambling and Other Behaviors with Addiction Risk: Clinical and Ethical Considerations
The COVID-19 pandemic has significantly impacted our lives with many individuals turning to coping strategies that involve addictive substances or other addictive behaviors, such as gambling. To gain insight into how individuals responded to COVID-19 related stress by changing gambling, gaming, alcohol use, and cannabis use behaviors, a probability-based panel sampling approach was taken to survey individuals aged 18+ during April and May 2021.

Over 1000 participants were asked about behavior changes from the year prior to the COVID-19 pandemic to the year following the government declaring a public health emergency. Survey findings will be presented that provide valuable insights into how COVID-19 has impacted gambling, gaming, alcohol, and cannabis use behaviors, factors related to an increased risk of harmful usage, and indicators suggesting increased rates of addictions may persist into the post-pandemic period. We will discuss how findings from the study will help inform clinical practices and raise ethical considerations.
